Inside the IWK Scoliosis Bracing Program

At Swing for Scoliosis, one of our core goals is to ensure that every child diagnosed with scoliosis in Atlantic Canada has timely access to life-changing care. One of the most important — yet often overlooked — tools in preventing surgery is a properly fitted scoliosis brace.

We recently spoke with the IWK Health Centre team to learn more about how their scoliosis bracing program works, who it helps, and where additional support is desperately needed.

Who Is Eligible for Bracing?

Children aged 9 to 15 with idiopathic scoliosis are typically referred to the IWK's bracing clinic if their spinal curve measures between 25–45 degrees (Cobb angle) and they are still growing. Bracing at this stage can prevent the curve from progressing into surgical range, especially when detected early.

How the Program Works

The clinic operates with a dedicated pediatric spine physician and orthotist Tara Barriero from Stride Bracing, who fabricates and custom fits each brace. Once bracing begins, families return every six months for monitoring. These check-ins include:

  • X-rays to track curve progression

  • Adjustments to ensure the brace continues to fit as the child grows

  • Support for the child and their family, both physically and emotionally

Recently, the program also began collaborating with a Schroth physiotherapist, bringing specialized scoliosis exercises into care plans for even better outcomes.

Cost of Care: A Barrier for Many

While private insurance may cover the $2,500–$3,000 cost of a brace, not all families have access to such coverage. A child may also require multiple braces over two years due to growth. For families without insurance, this expense can be devastating — and some decline brace treatment altogether, leading to preventable surgeries.

Why Your Support Matters

The IWK typically sees 40–50 bracing patients each year, with no waitlist thanks to their incredible team. But each year, several families are left scrambling to fund a brace out-of-pocket. That’s where we want to help.

Through our fundraising efforts, SFS is working to establish a dedicated Bracing Assistance Fund for families in financial need. Every dollar raised brings us closer to ensuring no child is denied care because of cost.
