A Successful First Tournament Raised $14,000 for the IWK Orthopaedic Department

On July 14, 2023, we hosted our very first Swing for Scoliosis Charity Golf Tournament at Grandview Golf & Country Club. With clear skies, an enthusiastic group of golfers, and a community united for a great cause, our inaugural event was a resounding success.

Swing for Scoliosis was founded with the mission to raise awareness and funds for scoliosis research and treatment. This cause is deeply personal to our family, as our daughter was diagnosed with scoliosis at the age of 12 and underwent spinal fusion surgery in 2020. Inspired by her journey and the care she received, we wanted to give back to the IWK Children’s Hospital’s Orthopaedic Team, who provide treatment to children across the Maritimes.

Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, donors, and participants, we raised an incredible $14,000 for the IWK Orthopaedic Department. These funds supported the efforts of the IWK Orthopaedic Research Team.

Swing for Scoliosis helped aid our participation in a large spine registry, the Pediatric Spine Study Group (by the Pediatric Spine Foundation), both on the data collection front and doing research on topics of interest using data from multiple institutions. This year Dr. El-Hawary with the assistance of our research staff team and trainees, as well as collaborators from other institutions, published 6 peer reviewed articles looking at how the spine grows when treated with new growth-sparing scoliosis devices, and how choices are made which device to use. We and our coauthors also presented 8 studies to the International Congress on Early Onset Scoliosis and the Growing Spine in Charleston, SC in Nov. We have two new medical trainees this year who are taking the extra time to work on research as well as clinical practice.

Our sincerest thanks for your support of our research, having evidence to base practice on is vital!

Our first tournament saw over 100 golfers take to the course, enjoying a day of friendly competition, prizes, and camaraderie. Participants had the chance to win exciting raffle prizes, and take part in various contests throughout the course. The energy and enthusiasm from everyone involved truly made the day special.

We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our volunteers, sponsors, and everyone who supported us in making this event possible.

Thank you for being part of our mission to support scoliosis research and treatment, together, we are making a difference, one swing at a time!
