Swing for Scoliosis Raises $16,000 at Second Annual Charity Golf Tournament

On July 13, 2024, we returned to Grandview Golf & Country Club for our Second Annual Swing for Scoliosis Charity Golf Tournament, and thanks to the overwhelming support of our community, we raised an incredible $16,000 in support of scoliosis care and research at the IWK Children’s Hospital.

Building on the momentum of our inaugural event, this year saw over 100 golfers take to the course once again, enjoying a day of friendly competition, on-course contests, raffle prizes, and meaningful connection — all in support of children living with scoliosis across the Maritimes.

Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, donors, and participants, the funds raised directly support the IWK Orthopaedic Team's groundbreaking research and patient care initiatives.

Over 2024, we were able to continue our work with the Pediatric Spine Study Group, with many patients at the IWK volunteering to share their treatment progress, combining with others across North America to allow research with unprecedented study population numbers. Our team published 12 peer-reviewed papers, the majority based on the PSSG registry data. Four of those papers focus on spine growth measurement, a research focus Dr. El-Hawary has led for over a decade to improve scoliosis treatment options. We contributed to 14 presentations at the 18th Annual International Congress on Early Onset Scoliosis, November 13–15, 2024, in Scottsdale, Arizona, and proudly received the Akbarnia Award (Best Paper) for our study on complications and unplanned returns to the OR five years after vertebral body tethering. Two of our collaborators were research fellows, able to dedicate time to build research careers — in part due to generous donations like yours.

We are incredibly proud to see this event grow — not only in attendance and funds raised, but in its impact on the lives of young patients and their families.

To our amazing volunteers, sponsors, participants, and supporters — thank you. Your contributions continue to make a lasting difference.
